Broken Neon — a custom Vinewood sign for FiveM in retro style
A finished custom Vinewood sign on a FiveM server. The Broken Neon style starts from the palette above and the flicker animation described below.

Amber and orange tubes that stutter and misfire, with one or two letters dropping out and catching again. The Monoton typeface draws each glyph as a double line like a real neon tube, and the flicker pattern is noise-driven rather than a simple blink, so it never falls into an obvious rhythm. Good for apocalypse, Rust-style and run-down city servers.

How the flicker animation behaves

Letters drop out and come back on a seeded random pattern, like tubes that are on their way out. Because the randomness is baked into the build, the same letters fail at the same moments for every player — it looks unreliable without actually being different from one client to the next.

It suits a sign that is meant to look like it has been up on the hill for thirty years.

The typeface

Broken Neon is set in Monoton, a multi-line face that reads as neon tube even before the lighting is applied. You are not locked to it — the banner creator carries 82 typefaces across 12 styles, and swapping one in keeps the palette and the motion exactly as they are. You can also upload a font of your own if your server already has one.

Where this style works

A sign that has been on the hill for forty years and has stopped being maintained. Monoton draws as tube neon before any lighting is applied, and the seeded failure pattern makes letters drop out and come back. It suits a period setting, a run-down district, or a server with a sense of humour about itself.

Day and night

This only really exists at night — the orange-to-amber tubes and the failing letters are the entire idea. In daylight it reads as an old painted sign with a slightly uneven finish, which is exactly what you would want from it.

Three things to change first

  1. Keep the failure rate lowOne or two letters out reads as age. Half of them reads as a bug.
  2. Stay warmOld neon was never white. The amber in the ramp is what sells the decade.
  3. Leave the stock standsA clean modern scaffold under a failing sign undoes the story.

What you actually get

A drop-in FiveM map resource: the letters or the cut-out as .ydr models, the colour ramp as a texture, a clip dictionary that animates it, the type definitions, the placement and a manifest. There is no script in the folder, so it costs no frame time, it keeps running when your resources restart, and every player sees the same frame of the loop. Building it takes about a minute after payment and the download never expires. Changing the design later and rebuilding is $10.

Questions about this style

Can I put my own words on the Broken Neon style?

Yes — VINEWOOD is only what the sample reads. Opening this style in the banner creator loads its palette, typeface and motion, and the text is the first thing you change. Nothing about the style is tied to the words.

What does the flicker animation cost in game?

Nothing measurable. The movement is baked into the map as a colour strip and a clip dictionary, the same mechanism the base game uses for its own moving signage, so there is no script and no per-frame work on any client.

Can I change the colours afterwards?

The palette is baked into the textures when the resource is built, so changing it means a rebuild. Doing that from your saved design costs $10; everything else about the design stays as you left it.
