The server icon is the small round image in the left sidebar, and in terms of how often it is looked at, it beats everything else a Discord community owns. It is also the asset most often designed as if it were going to be seen large.
Discord stores it at 512x512 and renders it at 48 pixels in the server rail, a little larger in the member list and in search. Then it crops it to a circle. Those two facts together mean a very short list of things actually work: a single bold mark, strong contrast against the sidebar grey, and a safe margin so the circular crop takes background rather than part of the symbol. A full server name does not work. A detailed scene does not work. The 512x512 in a pack is laid out at 48 pixels and scaled up, not the other way round.
Animation unlocks at boost Level 1, which is the cheapest tier and the one most active servers reach. An animated icon in the sidebar is genuinely effective because it is the only moving thing in a column of still circles. The animated file is a GIF at 16fps over 3.2 seconds with a 176-colour palette, under 7.8MB so it uploads without argument.
The pack also writes a 256x256 copy of the same render, which is what Discord bots, webhook avatars and most third-party server listing sites want.

Limits to respect
- Animated icon unlocks at boost Level 1
- Cropped to a circle, so corners are always lost
- Rendered at 512x512, displayed at 48 in the sidebar
Sizes cut from the same render
1 further copies are downscaled from the one 1024×1024 source, so the mark is identical at every size instead of laid out again at each one.

What goes wrong
The four failures that cost people the most time on this slot.
- Putting the full server name in the icon, where it is unreadable at 48 pixels
- Designing to the square and losing the corners to the circular crop
- Choosing an icon colour close to Discord's sidebar grey, so the shape disappears
- Expecting animation before the server reaches boost Level 1
Questions about this size
3 answers.
What size should a Discord server icon be?
512x512. Discord crops it to a circle and shows it at about 48 pixels in the sidebar, so design for that size and keep a safe margin at the edges.
What boost level animates the server icon?
Level 1. That is the first tier, and it also unlocks the invite splash background and custom role icons.
Should the icon have the server name on it?
No. At the size Discord renders it, lettering turns into noise. A single mark with strong contrast is the only thing that reads.
Formats that go with it
The other slots on the same journey.
Discord server banner, 960x540
The server banner slot does not exist until boost Level 2, which is why half the people who buy one cannot upload it.
FiveM server logo, 1024x1024 transparent
Six logo sizes from six separate exports means six slightly different marks. One render, downscaled, means one mark.
Discord profile picture, 300x300
Discord renders your avatar at 40 pixels next to a message. Design for 40 and scale up; do not design for 300 and hope.
