Discord profile picture, 300x300
Discord renders your avatar at 40 pixels next to a message. Design for 40 and scale up; do not design for 300 and hope.

An avatar is the most-rendered graphic on Discord. It appears beside every message you send, in every member list, in every reaction tooltip. It is also rendered at 40 pixels in the message list, which is smaller than most people realise when they are looking at a 300x300 file on their desktop.
The 300x300 in a pack is laid out for the circular crop: the mark is centred, the margin is even on all four sides, and there is no lettering that would need more than about a quarter of the frame to read. The still renders at 900x900, three times the target, so the downscale to 300 and then to 40 stays crisp rather than aliasing on the edges of the mark.
Animated avatars need Nitro. Without it Discord will accept the still PNG only. The animated version is a GIF at 20fps over 3.2 seconds, the highest frame rate of any Discord asset in a pack, because at 300x300 a frame costs almost nothing and a smooth loop at avatar size is noticeably nicer than a choppy one.
A practical note on colour: Discord's dark theme sits around a mid-dark grey, and an avatar whose dominant colour is close to it will visually disappear into the message list. The palette presets in the customiser were chosen to stay clear of that range, but if you set a custom colour it is worth checking the avatar against a dark background before you order.

What goes wrong
The four failures that cost people the most time on this slot.
- Putting detail in the corners, which the circular crop removes
- Designing at 300x300 without checking what it looks like at 40
- Choosing a dark grey accent that merges with Discord's dark theme
- Expecting a GIF avatar to work without Nitro
Questions about this size
3 answers.
What size is a Discord profile picture?
300x300 is a safe upload size. Discord crops to a circle and renders at about 40 pixels beside a message, so simplicity matters far more than resolution.
How do I get an animated Discord avatar?
Nitro. With it, Discord accepts a GIF avatar. Without it, only the still is accepted, which is why every pack ships both from the same frame.
Why is the mark centred rather than filling the frame?
Because the circular crop takes the corners. A centred mark with an even margin keeps everything you designed and loses only background.
Formats that go with it
The other slots on the same journey.
Discord server icon, 512x512
Discord shows your server icon at 48 pixels in the sidebar. Everything you put in the corners is cropped off by the circle anyway.
Discord profile banner, 680x240
Your profile banner is not your server's banner. It is 680x240, it lives in User Settings, and animating it needs Nitro rather than boosts.
FiveM server logo, 1024x1024 transparent
Six logo sizes from six separate exports means six slightly different marks. One render, downscaled, means one mark.
