A watermark is the smallest asset in a pack and often the one that returns the most. It is the lockup that sits in a corner of the screen during gameplay, which means it appears in every clip, every screenshot and every YouTube video your players make. Servers that grow through clips are almost always servers whose name is in the corner of those clips.

The format is 768x288 with full transparency, which is roughly a seventh of the width of a 1080p screen. That is large enough to read in a compressed Twitter video and small enough not to sit in the way. Because it is transparent it needs no background plate, so it can go over bright desert and dark night equally.

Two animated versions ship, and the reason is purely technical. The APNG is for anything that displays an image: a NUI overlay in a FiveM resource, a browser source in OBS, a CSS background. The alpha WebM is for anything that plays video, because video pipelines handle a VP9 WebM with an alpha channel properly while MP4 alpha support is inconsistent across players and encoders. Having both means you are not re-encoding anything to get it into your overlay.

For a FiveM NUI overlay the simplest route is a small resource with a NUI page whose body is nothing but the image positioned absolutely in a corner, loaded at server start and never hidden. The image is transparent, the page background is transparent, and the overlay costs effectively nothing because nothing is being computed per frame.

Limits to respect

  • Transparent, so it sits over gameplay with no background plate
  • WebM keeps its alpha channel, which MP4 cannot do reliably
  • 768x288 is sized for a corner at 1080p and scales down cleanly

What goes wrong

The four failures that cost people the most time on this slot.

  • Putting the watermark in the lower right, where most HUDs and the minimap already live
  • Scaling a 200px wide mark up to fill a corner, which blurs it
  • Using an MP4 for an alpha overlay and getting a black box
  • Making it so large or bright that clips look like adverts

Questions about this size

3 answers.

  • Where should an in-game watermark sit?

Top left or top right at 1080p. The lower right usually holds the minimap and the lower left holds chat and notifications on most FiveM HUD resources.

  • How do I add it as a FiveM overlay?

A tiny resource with a NUI page that shows the transparent image positioned in a corner. The page background stays transparent and the resource does no per-frame work.

  • Why is there both an APNG and a WebM?

Image contexts, including NUI and OBS browser sources, want the APNG. Video contexts want the WebM, because VP9 WebM carries an alpha channel reliably where MP4 does not.

Formats that go with it

  • FiveM server logo, 1024x1024 transparent

Six logo sizes from six separate exports means six slightly different marks. One render, downscaled, means one mark.

  • FiveM loading screen resource

A video loop costs every joining player a download and still stutters. A live scene costs nothing and runs at their refresh rate.

  • FiveM connecting banner, 1920x320

This is the one graphic every single player who joins your server sees, full width, while they have nothing else to look at.
