# Hiding the FiveM minimap: DisplayRadar, cars only, and menus

> DisplayRadar(false) hides the FiveM minimap. Here is the toggle, the loop that shows the radar only in vehicles, and how to keep it hidden in menus.

**Short answer.** Call `DisplayRadar(false)` to hide the minimap and `DisplayRadar(true)` to show it. To show it only in vehicles, check `IsPedInAnyVehicle(PlayerPedId(), false)` in a slow loop and toggle only when the state changes. `IsRadarHidden()` reads the current state. The health and armour bars under the radar are not part of this: they belong to the minimap scaleform, covered in [SETUP_HEALTH_ARMOUR and the bars under the radar](https://fam-tools.com/guides/fivem-minimap-scaleform-health-armour).

## Key points

- `DisplayRadar(false/true)` hides or shows the whole minimap.
- Check vehicle state every few hundred milliseconds, not every frame.
- Only call the native when the state actually changes.
- Health/armour bars are hidden through the minimap scaleform, not `DisplayRadar`.
- Coordinate with your HUD resource — two scripts toggling the radar will fight.

Plenty of roleplay servers hide the minimap on foot: it makes walking around the city feel less like a video game and gives phones, GPS items and maps a real purpose. Others hide the health and armour bars under the radar because their HUD draws its own. Both take a few lines of client code, and both are easy to get subtly wrong.

## Hiding and showing the radar

*client.lua*

```lua
DisplayRadar(false) -- hide
DisplayRadar(true)  -- show
-- Check the current state
print(IsRadarHidden())
```

`DisplayRadar` hides the minimap and everything drawn in it: the map texture, blips and the north indicator. The pause map is unaffected.

## Minimap only in vehicles

*client.lua*

```lua
local shown = nil
CreateThread(function()
    while true do
        local inVehicle = IsPedInAnyVehicle(PlayerPedId(), false)
        if inVehicle ~= shown then
            DisplayRadar(inVehicle)
            shown = inVehicle
        end
        Wait(300)
    end
end)
```

- The loop runs about three times a second, which is instant to a player and nearly free for the client.
- It only calls `DisplayRadar` when the state flips, so other scripts are not fought every frame.
- Bikes count as vehicles. To exclude them, check `IsPedOnAnyBike(ped)` as well.

> **Give players a reason to use a map** — A server that hides the radar on foot usually sells a “GPS” or “phone map” item that shows it again while held — a good bit of gameplay out of one boolean.

## Hiding the health and armour bars

The green and blue bars under the minimap belong to the minimap scaleform. HUD resources that draw their own health hide them with the scaleform method `SETUP_HEALTH_ARMOUR`. The widely used snippet:

*client.lua*

```lua
CreateThread(function()
    local minimap = RequestScaleformMovie('minimap')
    while not HasScaleformMovieLoaded(minimap) do Wait(0) end
    -- re-initialise the minimap so the setting sticks
    SetBigmapActive(true, false)
    Wait(0)
    SetBigmapActive(false, false)
    while true do
        BeginScaleformMovieMethod(minimap, 'SETUP_HEALTH_ARMOUR')
        ScaleformMovieMethodAddParamInt(3)
        EndScaleformMovieMethod()
        Wait(500)
    end
end)
```

The game can re-show the bars in some situations, which is why the call is repeated on a slow timer rather than made once.

## Menus, cutscenes and phones

Some interfaces look better with the radar hidden: a character creator, a clothing menu, a full-screen phone. The clean pattern is to hide it when the UI opens and restore the previous state when it closes — never assume it should be shown afterwards, because the player might be on foot on a vehicle-only server.

*client.lua*

```lua
local wasHidden
local function openMenu()
    wasHidden = IsRadarHidden()
    DisplayRadar(false)
    -- open your UI
end
local function closeMenu()
    DisplayRadar(not wasHidden)
end
```

## When two resources fight over the radar

If the minimap flickers or reappears, two scripts are toggling it — often a HUD with its own vehicle-only option plus a separate script like the one above. Pick one owner. Search your resources for `DisplayRadar` to find them. Custom minimap textures are not affected by any of this; hiding the radar does not unload them, and [install problems](https://fam-tools.com/guides/fivem-minimap-not-showing) are a different story.

## Questions

### How do I hide the minimap in FiveM?

Call `DisplayRadar(false)` in a client script. `DisplayRadar(true)` shows it again.

### How do I show the minimap only in cars?

Check `IsPedInAnyVehicle(PlayerPedId(), false)` in a loop with `Wait(300)` and call `DisplayRadar` only when the result changes.

### How do I remove the health and armour bars under the minimap?

Call the minimap scaleform method `SETUP_HEALTH_ARMOUR` with the parameter 3 on a slow timer, as in the snippet above.

### Why does my minimap flicker?

Two resources are toggling it. Find every `DisplayRadar` call in your resources and keep one owner.

### Does hiding the radar hide the pause map?

No. The pause map is separate and stays available.
